Tim Kurkjian says it best: Tony Gwynn was the best hitter since Ted Williams. And the former right fielder for the San Diego Padres will be an easy first-ballot Hall of Fame inductee. The man batted .338 during his 20 seasons and only he and Williams finished with an average so high in the last six decades.
That's a big reason why, on Jan. 9, Gwynn will be voted into the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.... (more)

Randy Johnson, never feeling at home in New York, may be an old (43 years) man headed west. The Yankees are reportedly in talks with the Diamondbacks about a deal for the tall, lanky southpaw. Johnson had some of his best years in Arizona winning four Cy Young titles and a co-MVP award for the '01 World Series. ... (more)

Sammy Sosa put on a power display in a Dominican Republic training exhibition this week, part of his optimistic plan to return to major league baseball. Sosa hit the ball out of the park 15 times while training at a field
in San Pedro de Macoris that is operated by the Japanese league's
Hiroshima Carp. The 38-year-old slugger said he had received calls from teams interested in signing him but declined to reveal their names.... (more)

Minnesota Twins ace Brad Radke is said to have made a decision about whether to return to the team in '07 or call it quits. Reports indicate the 34-year-old pitcher has chosen retirement. This past season, Radke went 12-9 with a 4.32 ERA in 28 starts. He endured a painful fracture of the glenoid in his throwing shoulder in late August but returned to the AL Central champions in the final weeks of the '06 campaign. A stalwart of the Twins' staff for a dozen years, Radke pitched at least 200 innings in nine of his 12 seasons, all with the Twins.

Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein is on record as seeking to trade the enigmatic Manny Ramirez. But arguably his most important teammate stated last night that he believes Manny should play for the team in '07.
Speaking at the Red Sox Academy near Santo Domingo, David Ortiz said he hoped
there weren't really plans to trade Ramirez. "I hope not, you know. Manny is a very important person to the team." Big Papi spoke to reporters and Red Sox trainees from the Dominican Republic
while dedicating a new batting cage named in his honor.

No one knows what deals may come out of the winter meetings in Disney World, but so far player signings have had Fantasyland price tags. In the last month, the Boston Red Sox have offered $51.1 million to negotiate with Daisuke Matsuzaka, and probably will pony up another $50 million to sign him. Alfonso Soriano got $136 million from the Cubs and Carlos Lee copped $100 million from the Astros. That's true, and yet, some of the bigger free agents such as pitchers Barry Zito and Jason Schmidt have yet to sign. Yes, the salary market is spiking again, and I think we all know what that will do for the average fan's ticket price.
