The Atlanta Braves and Tom Glavine made their reunion official today, as the former star lefty secured a 1-year, $8 million deal that should allow him to retire as a Brave. Glavine won 242 games for the Braves from !987-2002, including the team's World Series clincher in 1995. Though Glavine ended the season poorly for the Mets, he still pitched over 200 innings. The Braves can use that kind of consistency in the starting rotation next season, one in which Glavine will be 42 years old.

In a stunning about-face, Alex Rodriguez is talking to Yankee management about an estimated 10-year, $275 million contract. It appears that super agent Scott Boras could not secure the $30 million per year long term deal with another team. Or, he must have concluded his chances were fading. Plain and simple, Mr. Boras misread the market. So the question is...how will loyal New York Yankee fans react to A-Rod's circuitous return?

Reports today suggest Jorge Posada and his current employer, the New York Yankees, will soon agree on a new deal to keep the clutch-hitting catcher in the Bronx. Posada says "his heart is with the Yankees" and hopes "we'll get something done." Across the river in Queens, the New York Mets have big-time needs behind the plate and make no bones about desiring Jorge. But at present, it appears those desires will go wanting.

Young 3rd baseman batting whiz Miguel Cabrera of the Florida Marlins is being dangled as trade bait at the winter meetings in Orlando. He's likely to demand a circa $10 million salary, and the budget-minded team from Miami is opting out. Last season, the productive hitter posted .320 with 34 homers and 119 RBIs. Where might Miguel go? Well, as we know, the Yankees are in need of a 3rd baseman. But signing Cabrera could be a weighty decision for GM Brian Cashman.

Future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux, a 347-game winner, resigned with San Diego Monday for a reported one year, $10 million deal. Maddux is expected to assume San Diego's No. 3 starter role after posting a 14-11 won-lost record with a 4.14 ERA in '07. Known as a fiery competitor, and a pitching artist who paints the corners of the plate, Maddux also is a team leader. The Padres love that quality, among many others that "Mad Dog" brings to the game.

Is it possible? I mean, really possible? Not likely. Some team will pony up the ridiculous dollars to bring the A-Rod traveling circus to town. Pundits say the Angels and Dodgers are top prospects because they are so desperate for hitting. Or maybe Alex Rodriguez can re-do the Barry Bonds home run chase with the Giants. But wouldn't it be cool to see Scott Boras have to lower his asking price because there are no takers? I know. That's the stuff of dreams.
