Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau smiles during a news conference Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006 in Minneapolis after he was named the American League Most Valuable Player, edging out New York Yankees' Derek Jeter. The Twins' young first baseman Justin Morneau beat out  Yankees' superstar shortstop Derek Jeter to become the first Minnesota player to win the award since 1977. The 25-year-old from Canada received 15 first-place votes; Jeter got 12 firsts to finish a close second. Morneau joins honored teammates Johan Santana, who won his second AL Cy Young Award, and friend Joe Mauer who claimed the American League batting title with a .347 average. For the season, Morneau batted .321 with 34 home runs and an impressive 130 runs batted in. ... (more)

Rookie manager Joe Girardi of the Florida Marlins was voted the National League manager of the year yesterday by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Too bad he no longer manages the team. Despite his award-winning performance, Girardi got the ax from Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria two days after the season ended. Apparently sports writers have a different view of Joe's worth than Mr. Loria. Despite a micro-size payroll, Girardi kept Florida in playoff contention deep into September. Nice job, Joe.
