The worst-to-first Cinderella team of 2008, Tampa Bay put away Boston Sunday night 3-1, claiming a spot in the fall classic opposite Philadelphia. The outcome was still in doubt when rookie reliever David Price struck out J.D. Drew to end a serious Red Sox threat in the 8th. Both teams fought hard during a tense pitcher's duel, but Matt Garza bested Jon Lester, allowing just two hits and one earned run while notching 9 K's. Each starter dominated, going seven full innings. For the Rays, DH Willy Aybar played a key role, scoring two runs and giving his team a 3-1 cushion with a solo homer in the bottom of the 7th.

Boston pulled off the biggest postseason comeback since 1929 last night, beating Tampa Bay 8-7 to send the series back to St. Petersburg. J.D. Drew capped Red Sox heroics with a 2-out single in the last of the 9th, knocking in the eighth unanswered run to deliver an amazing 8-7 victory. Trailing 7-0 with two outs in the 7th, Boston began the rally with David
Ortiz’s 3-run homer. Prior to that, the Rays had pounded Boston pitching with an explosion of long balls from B.J. Upton, Carlos
Pena and Evan Longoria. The game seemed a done deal until Big Papi went deep.

Claiming its first NL pennant since 1993, Philadelphia put away the fumbling Dodgers last night, 5-1 in Los Angeles. The Phillies now await the winner of the Boston-Tampa Bay matchup. The Rays, with a 3-1 series lead, look to capture the AL crown tonight at Fenway Park. LA Shortstop Rafael Furcal made three errors to boost the Phillies' cause, while ace starter Cole Hamels silenced Dodger bats with a sparkling 5-hit, 7-inning performance. Jimmy Rollins homered for Philadelphia in the top of the 1st to set the game's tone, and slugger Ryan Howard had a 3-hit night to pace the offense.

The heart of Tampa Bay's lineup homered over the Green Monster four times last night, pounding Boston 9-1. The offensive explosion overshadowed a fine pitching performance by Rays' starter Matt Garza who tossed a nifty 6-hitter, allowing just one earned run. Meanwhile, Red Sox' ace Jon Lester gave up eight hits and four earned runs in 5.2 innings. Tampa's 13-hit attack was paced early by B.J. Upton and Evan Longoria, later by Rocco Baldelli and Carlos Pena, all clearing the legendary left field wall. Upton's shot literally left the ballpark, but more important, it gave Tampa Bay a commanding 4-0 lead.

Los Angeles scored five in the 1st inning and breezed to a 7-2 victory over Philadelphia Sunday night at Chez Ravine. The win gave the Dodgers life in the best of seven series, trailing 2-1 with two more home games on tap. Hiroki Kuroda tossed a 5-hitter over six innings and L.A.'s bullpen kept the Phillies scoreless from there. Leading the offensive charge, Blake DeWitt tripled in three off an ineffective Jamie Moyer, and the rout was on. Rafael Furcal, Nomar Garciaparra and Matt Kemp chipped in with two hits each.

The two teams have dueled in the AL East all season. So fans know this matchup stacks up very evenly. Tampa Bay has risen from baseball's worst record last season to become a solid postseason contender, while Boston looks to repeat as World Series champs. Each team defended its home turf well during the regular season, but the Rays have a slight edge in winning all six 1-run games. The Rays have speed, the Sox have power. Both squads have good starting pitching, good bullpens, good defense and good benches. It should be a great championship series.

The Dodgers and Red Sox both notched convincing victories as visitors Wednesday in Chicago and Anaheim, respectively. Los Angeles homered its way to a 7-2 romp at Wrigley Field, paced by James Loney's grand slam. Starter Derek Lowe pitched six strong innings to get the win. In Anaheim, the visiting Red Sox let Jon Lester quiet the fearsome bats of the LA Angels to post a 4-1 victory to start the AL division series. Lester scattered six hits and struck out seven over seven innings, backed by leadoff man Jacoby Ellsbury's 3-for-5 day. The Dodgers try for a 2-0 series lead tonight against the Cubs' ace Carlos Zamabrano.
