Jesse Litsch tossed his second straight shutout Thursday, leading Toronto to a lopsided 12-0 win over Oakland. The victory capped the Blue Jays 7th win in eight tries. Scattering seven hits over seven innings, Litsch won his 7th game in a row against one defeat back in April. Toronto batters pounded out 17 hits against Oakland pitchers and also drew seven walks. By far, this was the Jays' most productive offensive game of the year.

Alfonso Soriano lifted Chicago to its third win in a row last night in a 2-1, 10 inning thriller at Wrigley field. His game-winning single sealed a late inning comeback for the Cubs following a classic pitching duel between Carlos Zambrano and the Dodgers' Derek Lowe. Though his defensive skills sometime create an adventure in left field, Soriano was mobbed by his teammates after he ensured victory in the bottom of the 10th. The Cubs had scratched out a tie in the 9th with a bases-loaded sac fly off L.A. closer Takashi Saito by Geovany Soto.

Chicago turned it around with a home win on Memorial Day, nipping Los Angeles 3-1 behind Ryan Dempster's strong pitching. Derrek Lee gave his starter all the offense he needed with a 2-run homer in the 1st inning. The Dodgers stranded a dozen runners in the frustrating loss at Wrigley Field. Squandering ten hits total, the team from L.A. also failed to support a fine effort by their starting pitcher, Chad Billingsley. Billingsley struck out seven and scattered four hits in the loss. Finishing the 9th for his 11th save was converted closer Kerry Wood, who struck out two.

Tom Glavine overcame a rocky start to lead Atlanta over punchless New York in the first of a twin bill Tuesday, 6-1. Then journeyman Jorge Campillo pitched even better to secure a second win in the nightcap (6-2). Braves' batters delivered timely hits when needed, including the rampaging Chipper Jones, who went 4 for 8 in the two games. Atlanta pounded out 20 hits day and night, including home runs by Mark Kotsay and Brian McCann.

Juan Pierre helped Los Angeles end a 5-game losing streak last night with a dramatic two-run double in the 9th off Milwaukee's newest closer, Guillermo
Mota. Demoted closer Eric Gagne watched his former team complete the comeback from his spot on the bench. Giving up four runs and six hits over six innings, Dodgers starter Derek Lowe kept his team in the game. The Brewers had built a 4-1 lead through six, but L.A. scored two unearned in the 7th to make it a 1-run contest. Then Juan Pierre delivered in the top of the 9th, allowing Dodger closer Takashi Saito to toss a 1-2-3 bottom half for his sixth save.

A pinch hit by utility man Daryle Ward lifted Chicago over Arizona for the second day in a row Sunday at cold, windy Wrigley Field. Both scheduled starters were benched because of the weather as an anticipated pitching duel became more of a slugfest. Carrying a 4-2 lead into the 7th, the Diamondbacks bullpen gave up four earned runs while the Cubs' pen tossed a no-hitter for 4-2/3 to close out the contest. Kerry Wood picked up save number seven in a perfect 9th. Chicago next hosts San Diego while Arizona returns home to welcome Colorado.

Ervin Santana tossed a 4-hit, complete game, shutout masterpiece last night to lead the Angels to a 4-0 win over the Royals. The game actually entered the 9th inning tied 0-0. But Los Angeles bats came alive just in time with a triple, run-scoring single and back to back homers by Garret Anderson and Brandon Wood. Kansas City had its own fine performance by starter Brett Tomko who matched Santana pitch for pitch through seven shutout innings. Striking out nine and walking none, Santana boasts a 6-0 record and lowered his ERA to a stingy 2.02, third best in the AL. ... (more)

Minnesota rallied to beat Detroit 7-6 Sunday, taking a 1.5 game lead in their division thanks to five home wins in a row. Yesterday, the Twins did it the hard way, coming back from an 0-6 deficit. Tiger hitters jumped on Minnesota starter Boof Bonser for six quick runs before the bats went silent. Bonser settled in and actually finished six innings to keep his team in it. Catcher Joe Mauer led the way with a go-ahead two-run single in the 7th to cap the comeback at 7-6. Detroit starter Kenny Rogers cruised till then, retiring the first 11 Twins he faced. But he was hit hard in the pivotal 7th, and Tiger bats were tamed the rest of the way by Twins relievers. ... (more)

Texas polished off a positive homestand today with a 2-1 afternoon victory over Kansas City. The Rangers have won 4 of 6 from the Twins and Royals before embarking on a challenging western road trip. Claiming his first victory in exactly a year, Sidney Ponson pitched eight strong innings, giving up just one run and six hits. Texas batters only collected five hits, but that did the trick thanks to home runs by Ian Kinsler and Ramon Vazquez. ... (more)
