 He's 35 years old, and he hasn't pitched in a big league game since August, 2005. But beleagured Brave Mike Hampton is getting close to a much anticipated spring training start. According to insiders, his double-surgeried left elbow is fine; the main concern centers on his right hamstring. So far he has held up well throwing batting practice to Atlanta teammates. But that's not the same thing as fielding your position, ptiching in a live game to hungry major league hitters. ... (more)

The sweetest words in the English language? "Pitchers and catchers report to camp...." Ol' Man Winter has blasted his share of icicles our way in the last few weeks, but spring is just around the corner. Well, at least it's closer than it was. Real spring training games are now just a few weeks away. That's when we'll hear another pair of beautiful words from men dressed in blue. "Play Ball!" ... (more)

In a surprise announcement, the Red Sox say Curt Schilling has a shoulder injury and will not be in the team's rotation for the start of the '08 season. In fact, the veteran right hander's career is in jeopardy. Dr. Craig Morgan (Curt's doctor) told the Boston Herald that the biceps in Schilling's shoulder look like "three strands of spaghetti" and that it cannot be fixed by rehabilitation. Yet that is the course of treatment the team has advised Schilling to pursue. Don't look for the 41-year-old to pitch this year, as shoulder injuries such as his are complex and difficult to treat, by surgery or otherwise. ... (more)

New York Mets fans have a lot to cheer about as their trade for super lefty Johan Santana is now completed. Best of all, it appears the Mets got the better end of the deal with the Minnesota Twins. While double Cy Young winner Santana is one of the best pitchers in baseball, the Twins settle for three young Mets' hurlers (including Philip Humber), along with speedy outfielder Carlos Gomez. Basically, Minnesota is getting a lot of untested talent. But acquiring Santana now makes New York the runaway pick to win the NL East.
