Boston Red Sox star Curt Schilling said Monday he will not retire at the end of the '07 season as previously believed and plans to pitch in '08. The only team he won't pitch for is the New York Yankees. Red Sox owner John Henry welcomed the announcement from his veteran right-hander. Schilling was a hero in the '04 playoffs when he pitched with a badly injured ankle. On the Internet, pictures of his bloody sock became legend. ... (more)

After almost two full months from the initial transaction, J.D. Drew and the Boston Red Sox are due to announce a deal any hour now. The new Sox right fielder will hit in the middle of the lineup behind David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez. That is a serious offensive trio for any pitcher to face. The oft-injured Drew played in 146 games last year for the Dodgers, and Fenway fans expect at least as many from him in '07. ... (more)

According to Jorge Posada, Bernie Williams will stay a New York Yankee, whether he plays or not in 2007. First a Yankee and always a Yankee, Williams unfortunately is an outfielder without a spot in the starting lineup. With Hideki Matsui in left, Johnny Damon in center, Bobby Abreu in right and Melky Cabrera as a capable back-up, the team just doesn't need Bernie in the field. And the DH spot is taken.

Pitcher Francisco Liriano said today he hopes he'll recuperate from elbow surgery in time to start throwing off a mound in October. That means the Minnesota Twins won't see his services until 2008. Which makes sense, since elbow surgeries almost always take a minimum of one year before throwing off a mound is possible. At that point it's usually months before a major league start is really possible. Liriano had surgery in early November, so all signs point to spring '08.

Albert Pujols is in the Dominican Republic this week with a team of doctors helping needy children receive medical aid. Sponsored by his charity, The Pujols Family Foundation, the humanitarian visit will cause the Cardinals' slugger to miss a team appearance at the White House. Albert's offseason effort shows that not all is wrong in the world of baseball, steroids and spiraling salaries aside.

Reports today indicate Barry Bonds failed a drug test for amphetamines last summer. Worse still, he blamed the failed results on his teammate, Mark Sweeney. How low can Bonds go? If he fails a second test, it will mean an automatic 25-game suspension. That would be a significant road block to his pursuit of Hammerin' Hank (now just 22 home runs ahead).

Generally regarded as the hardest thrower in the game today, Joel Zumaya brings major heat out of the Detroit Tigers bullpen. Only 22 years old, Zumaya has been clocked consistently at 100 miles per hour and above. His memorable faceoff against A-Rod in the AL Division Series saw five of six pitches at 101 mph or higher. Later, against  Oakland's Frank Thomas, Zumaya (nicknamed Zoom-Zoom) notched an incredible 104.8 mph. That is fierce heat. ... (more)
